Distilled at the Glenglye distillery in Cambeltown, Kilkerran is the most recent brand to be added to the Mitchell Company's portfolio. The original distillery was closed in 1925 and it wasnt until 2000 when Hedley Wright, the owner of Springbank, decided to purchase the site. Hedley is a relative of the original William Mitchell who built the distillery in 1872 and was very eager to begin making whisky at his family's location once again. The first new distillation of Kilkerran was in 2004 with 'Work in progress" limited edition bottlings being released yearly between 2009 and 2015, leading up to the launch of Kilkerran 12 in 2016. During this time the distillery has experiemented with heavily peated malt and once again released a "peat in progress" yearly edition, with the hope of launching a core product of heavily peated whisky in the future.
