Brora

Used to create peated malt for the Johnnie Walker blend whilst Caol Ila underwent renovations, demand for Brora whisky has exploded within the last decade. Brora was originally known as the Clynelish distillery, however in 1968 a new distillery on the same site was created and the Clynelish name transferred across. The original distillery was then renamed Brora and from 1969 to 1973 Brora made heavily peated malt, gradually decreasing its level of peating from 1974 until its 1983 closure. Later expressions of Brora, such as this 1982 vintage are much more like the original "Clynelish" lightly peated malt produced prior to its requirement as a blend component. The Brora distillery was recently revived, and Diageo are hoping to see the site return to its former glory throughout the 1970's.
