Archie Rose Whisky Gone A Rye #2

The 16th release in Archie Rose's Trials & Exceptions series, this edition is the recreation of what was initially a happy accident where ex-Apera casks were supposed to be filled with mature single malt whisky, but were instead filled with rye malt whisky. This second 2019 distilled version uses a mashbill of rye malt and pale malt filled into Australian Apera casks. One of 1550 bottles at 51% ABV.

Archie Rose

Founded in 2014 by William Edwards, Archie Rose produces a range of award winning spirits including gin, vodka, rum, rye whisky and single malt whisky. After visiting a number of distilleries in the USA in 2012, Will ventured to Tasmania to learn hands on whisky producing skills before bringing them back home. In 2015 the Archie Rose distillery and bar was opened in Rosebury, Sydney. Three copper pot stills heated by steam were created by Australian stillmaker Peter Bailley specially for Archie Rose and have allowed the distilling team to create a variety of spirits and malt types simultaneously. They have been picking up awards for their products from 2017 when their white rye, vodka and signature gin competed in the US awards circuit. This success allowed for the construction of an additional distillery space in Banksmeadow that was completed in 2020. This new distillery space is one of the most innovative sites anywhere in the world and is now Australia’s largest distillery.

Archie Rose released their very first single malt at the end of 2020 and their first batch of malt rye whisky in early 2019. These whiskies are much more unique than their global counterparts. Where typical rye whisky is made using a combination of malted barley and unmalted rye grains and then aged in a virgin oak cask, Archie Rose elect to use a 100% malted barley mash bill before maturing the whisky for 36 months in a virgin oak cask. The same care over grains is applied to their single malt production with a six malt mash bill being the core of their new make. They then mature the malt whisky in a combination of ex-apera casks, ex-bourbon and even their own ex-rye casks. Their innovation into heritage grains and complex mashbills has created a reputation for Archie Rose as being the centre of innovation in Australia.
