Caroni 1996 20 Year Old 35th Release

A 1996 vintage release of the closed rum distillery Caroni. This 20 Year Old expression is crafted from the final remaining casks Luca Gargano discovered in Trinidad in 2004. These heavily tropically matured casks experienced almost 85% loss to angel's share. This is the 35th release bottled by Velier in 2016 at 70.1% ABV. One of 3038 bottles.

Note that this bottle has had a small leak at some point. Carefully examine photos and fill level before bidding. We recommend the winning bidder pick up rather than ship the bottle.

Caroni

The Caroni distillery was established in 1923 on the site of the old Caroni sugar plant in Trinidad. Using both pot and column stills, Caroni was known for creating a heavy and full bodied style of rum that was heavily favoured by the British Navy and brought considerable structure to rum blends of the time. The distillery was sold in 2001 to Angosturra who promptly closed it. In a stroke of good luck however, Caroni wouldn't fade away like many other shuttered distilleries. On a trip to Trinidad in 2004, legendary rum bottler and pioneer Luca Gargano learned of a warehouse still full of ageing Caroni rum casks. He promptly purchased the entire warehouse's stock and over the last 20 years has drip fed stock through various independent bottlers and his own Velier label.
