Kanosuke is a single malt Japanese whisky which embodies Kanosuke DistilleryÕs concept of ÒMELLOW LAND, MELLOW WHISKYÓ and was produced using all 3 of our pot stills, aged in several varieties of oak barrels, and blended together after 3 years of maturation. Produced between 2017-18 and is their first single malt Japanese whisky. Made with unpeated malt, it is bottled at cask strength from a blend of barrels, with re-charred American white oak ex-ÒMellowed KozuruÓ aged shochu casks as key.

Distillery

Kanosuke

Originally founded in 2015, the Kanosuke distillery is located in Hioki, Kagoshima. A hotter climate than many of Japan’s distilleries, Kanosuke began its production in 2017 and is equipped with 3 pot stills utilising traditional Scottish worm tub condensers. The distillery was started by company Komasa Jozo, a large shochu maker in Kagoshima who saw the opportunity to create a whisky distillery to promote their shochu production. Vacant land next to their shochu maturation warehouse was purchased and Yoshitsugu Komasa, the fourth generation of Komasa family to run the company, decided they would produce a single malt whisky.  
 
The distillery's first release came in June 2021, aged for almost 4 years in re-charred American oak and shochu casks. These types of casks combined with Kagoshimas warm and humid climate contribute towards a large amount of wood contact, allowing for Kanosuke to age their whisky in a short period of time. In September 2021, Diageo purchased a minority stake in Kanosuke through its Distill Ventures company, providing funding for the distillery to expand its production even further. If Kanosuke hits its targets throughout the next few years, Diageo will enter a 50:50 ownership agreement with Komasa Jozo.
